Can my neighbour complain about my air conditioning unit?
Yes, and noise is the ground that matters: a condenser audible in a neighbour's bedroom at night can be a statutory nuisance, which councils investigate and can require you to abate. The fix is entirely preventable at design stage: a quiet unit, sited away from bedroom windows including next door's, on anti-vibration mounts.
Councils receive air conditioning noise complaints every summer, overwhelmingly about badly sited or badly mounted units. Environmental health teams assess whether the noise amounts to a statutory nuisance; if it does, an abatement notice can require the unit moved, attenuated or silenced at night. Losing that argument after installation costs far more than getting the position right before it.
The physics is manageable. A modern domestic condenser produces roughly 45 to 55 dB(A) a metre away, quieter than conversation, and sound falls fast with distance: ten metres and a boundary away it merges into London's night-time background. The problems are proximity and structure: a unit on a party wall transmits hum through the building, and one below a bedroom window concentrates sound exactly where sleep happens.
Our siting rules exist for this reason: never below a bedroom window, yours or a neighbour's, when any alternative exists; anti-vibration mounts always; night-mode or low-sound units specified where boundaries are tight; and in terraced gardens we assess the houses behind as well as beside. Occasionally the honest survey conclusion is that a position would cause a dispute, and we say so.
If you are on the receiving end of a noisy unit, the sequence that works: a friendly conversation first (perished mounts are often the culprit and cheap to fix), then the council's environmental health team if nothing changes.
