How often does air conditioning need servicing?
Once a year for a domestic system in normal use. The schedule is a warranty condition, not an upsell: the mainstream manufacturers require annual professional servicing with records for their 5–7 year warranties to hold. In between, the only maintenance you should do yourself is rinsing the indoor filters every month or two in summer, which takes five minutes and keeps airflow honest.

Because the indoor coil sits wet in the dark every time the unit cools, condensation is how cooling works, and dust that reaches a wet coil becomes a biofilm. Left alone it progresses from a smell at start-up to mould spotting on the louvres. A service strips and cleans the coil, tray and drain; between services, running the unit on fan-only for 20 minutes after long cooling sessions dries the coil and holds the smell off.

A sealed system should not, refrigerant is not consumed like fuel, and a correctly installed split holds its charge for its lifetime. Falling performance therefore means either dirty coils and filters (the common case, fixed by cleaning) or a leak (the rare case, and a legal matter: F-Gas rules require leaks to be found and repaired, not topped up annually). If someone offers you a yearly 'regas' as routine maintenance, find another engineer.

The line we use: if the system is under 10 years old, cools well and a service restores its performance, keep it. If it runs on R410A or the long-obsolete R22, needs a repair costing more than a third of replacement, or the manufacturer no longer stocks parts, the maths starts favouring a new R32 system, roughly 10–20% more efficient like-for-like, with a fresh 5–7 year warranty.
