Why is my air conditioning running but not cooling?
In rough order of likelihood: filters or coils clogged enough to choke airflow (a cleaning job, not a breakdown), the unit accidentally set to fan or heat mode, a failed sensor or capacitor stopping the compressor, or, least often but most serious, a refrigerant leak. The pattern is diagnostic: weak-but-cool airflow points at cleaning; room-temperature air with the outdoor unit silent points at electrics; a slow decline over weeks points at a leak. That triage is what the diagnostic visit does properly.

The condensate drain has stopped taking water away. Cooling pulls litres of water out of London summer air every day; it collects in a tray behind the indoor unit and leaves through a small pipe. When that pipe blocks with dust and biofilm, or a condensate pump fails, the tray overflows into the room. It is one of the cheapest faults we fix and one of the most damaging to leave: it will stain a ceiling or wall long before it stops on its own.

If your system is low on refrigerant, it has a leak, refrigerant does not get used up. UK F-Gas law says leaks must be found and repaired before a system is recharged, so 'a quick regas' every summer is both illegal as routine practice and a waste of your money: the new charge escapes the same hole. We leak-test, quote the repair, fix it, then recharge and prove the fix with a pressure test. It costs more than the cowboy option once, and nothing every year after.

Over 10 years, on an older refrigerant, or facing a compressor or heat-exchanger failure, the £1,600–£2,600 a new install costs buys you 10–20% better efficiency, quieter running and a fresh 5–7 year warranty, and the repair money is better spent there.
