Is a multi-split cheaper than separate units?
For two rooms it is usually £300–£600 more than two singles on hardware, and it earns that back in everything else: one condenser position to agree with planning and neighbours instead of two, one structural fixing, one service visit a year. From three rooms up the multi-split is almost always cheaper overall, because separate condensers for three rooms is £1,000+ of duplicated outdoor kit; very few London homes have three good places to put one.

Yes, each indoor unit has its own remote and setpoint, and rooms can run independently. The one real constraint of a multi-split: all rooms share the outdoor unit's mode, so you cannot heat one room while cooling another at the same moment. In practice this never bites, nobody wants heating in one bedroom and cooling in the next, but it is the honest difference versus fully separate systems.

The usual candidates, in order: the rear ground-floor wall below a window, the side return, a flat roof over a back extension, or wall brackets at first-floor level on the rear elevation. Never the front elevation, planning officers and neighbours both notice. The constraints are pipe length to the furthest room, a place the condensate can drain, and keeping the unit's night-time sound away from bedroom windows, including next door's.
