Is it worth installing AC in the UK?
For a growing number of London homes, yes. Heatwaves have lengthened, 40°C has been recorded, and lofts, top-floor flats and glazed extensions become genuinely unusable for weeks each summer. A £1,600 to £2,600 install that also heats efficiently in winter earns its keep on sleep alone, and estate agents increasingly list installed cooling as a feature rather than a curiosity.
The honest way to answer this is room by room, not house by house. A shaded north-facing Victorian ground floor may never need cooling. The loft bedroom above it, under slates, can hold 28 to 30°C at midnight through a heatwave, and no fan changes that, because fans move heat around rather than removing it. If someone in your household sleeps badly for two or three weeks every summer, the case is already made.
The climate maths keeps moving one way. London recorded 40°C in 2022; heatwave days have multiplied over the last two decades; and the urban heat island keeps inner-London nights several degrees above the surrounding counties. New-build regulations now treat overheating as a design risk in its own right, which tells you where the trajectory points.
What tips the value calculation is that a modern split is not only a cooler. It is an air-to-air heat pump that heats the same room at roughly three units of heat per unit of electricity, a dehumidifier in muggy weather, and a filter for pollen-season air. Most owners tell us the winter and shoulder-season use surprised them.
