What is the 3-minute rule for air conditioners?
The 3-minute rule says wait about three minutes before restarting an air conditioner after switching it off, so refrigerant pressures can equalise; restarting a compressor against high pressure strains it. Modern units make the rule automatic with a built-in restart delay, so it survives mainly as advice for older systems and as an explanation for the pause you notice at switch-on.
The rule comes from real physics. While the compressor runs, one side of the refrigerant circuit sits at high pressure and the other low. Switch off, and those pressures take a couple of minutes to equalise. A compressor asked to start immediately against the residual pressure difference draws heavy current and takes mechanical strain, and on old or basic equipment repeated hard restarts shortened compressor life.
Manufacturers solved this decades ago: every modern unit has a restart delay timer, typically three minutes, built into its control board. Switch it off and on again and the fan may respond immediately, but the compressor quietly waits out its delay. That pause is not a fault, and you cannot override it by pressing buttons harder.
The rule's useful modern relative concerns power cuts and trips: after power returns, letting the system sit a few minutes before restarting costs nothing and is kind to the electronics. And if a unit is repeatedly stopping and starting on its own every few minutes, that is short cycling, a genuine fault or a sizing problem worth a diagnostic visit, not a rule to wait out.
