Yes. Air conditioning systems are engineered for continuous running; offices and server rooms run them around the clock for years. A modern inverter unit holding a set temperature modulates down to a trickle, so two days of steady holding often costs less than people fear, a few pounds. The practical caveats are clean filters and a clear condensate drain, not the running time itself.
Nothing about 48 hours of operation troubles the hardware. Compressors are rated for duty cycles that make a domestic heatwave look like idling, and the failure modes that matter, dirty coils, blocked drains, low refrigerant from leaks, come from neglect, not hours. During a heatwave, letting the system hold a temperature continuously is often the efficient strategy: maintaining 24°C costs less than repeatedly rescuing a room from 30°C.
The electricity question has a reassuring shape. Inverter units run hard only while pulling temperature down; holding it, they modulate to a few hundred watts and cycle gently. A bedroom unit holding temperature through a hot weekend might meter 8 to 15kWh across the whole two days, roughly £2 to £4 at current rates.
The genuine considerations for long running are maintenance-flavoured. Filters loaded with dust make the fan work harder every hour it runs. The condensate system carries litres of water per day in humid weather, so a marginal drain announces itself during exactly these stretches. Both are what the annual service exists for.
Two refinements worth adopting: use the timer or app schedule so an empty house coasts a few degrees warmer and pulls back down before you return, and in muggy weather try dry mode, which prioritises moisture removal and often makes 25°C feel like 22.
