Is it healthy to sleep with air conditioning on?

Short answer

Set up properly, yes: sleep research puts ideal bedroom temperature around 16 to 19°C, and cooling a hot room measurably improves sleep quality. The complaints people blame on air conditioning, dry throats and stiff necks, come from cold air blowing directly across the bed, a positioning and setup error rather than a property of cooling itself.

Heat is the enemy of sleep: above roughly 24°C, studies show more waking, less deep sleep and less REM. London heatwave bedrooms sit well above that for days, which is why the bedroom is where air conditioning changes life most. A room held at 18 to 20°C turns survival nights back into ordinary ones.

The legitimate complaints have mechanical causes with mechanical fixes. Draught across the bed: the unit should be positioned so airflow washes the room, not the pillow, which is an installation decision we make deliberately, plus vane settings that direct air along the ceiling. Dryness: cooling removes moisture, so very long cold runs in already-dry air can dry throats; sleep mode's gentler profile and sensible setpoints prevent it. Noise: a bedroom deserves a quiet-specification unit, 19 to 26 dB(A) on night settings, chosen for exactly this.

Use sleep mode where the unit offers it: it dims the display, silences beeps, softens the fan and drifts the setpoint up a degree or two through the night, matching how body temperature behaves while you sleep and trimming consumption at the same time.

Two habits complete the setup: keep the filters rinsed so the air stays clean, and run the annual service so the coil that conditions your bedroom air stays a coil rather than a biofilm. With those, sleeping with cooling is not just safe; for hot-summer London it is the whole point.
