Does air conditioning dehumidify?
Yes, dehumidification is built into how cooling works: warm room air crossing the cold indoor coil condenses its moisture out, litres of it a day in muggy weather, drained away outside. Most units also offer a dedicated dry mode that prioritises moisture removal over temperature, the setting that makes London's clammy 26°C days comfortable.
The physics rides along free. Air can hold less water when cold, so as the indoor coil chills the airstream below its dew point, moisture condenses onto the coil exactly as it does on a cold drink. The condensate collects in a tray and leaves through the drain. On a humid August day a hard-working unit removes several litres.
This is a large share of why conditioned air feels so much better than the thermometer alone explains. Humid heat blocks the body's own evaporative cooling; strip the humidity and the same temperature feels genuinely cooler. London's summer discomfort is often more muggy than hot, which makes the dehumidification half of the machine's work the half you notice.
Dry mode reorders the priorities: the unit runs its coil cold at low fan speed to maximise condensation while barely lowering air temperature. On close, damp days, thundery afternoons, drying laundry indoors, muggy 25°C that a lower setpoint would turn cold and clammy rather than comfortable, it is the right tool and cheaper to run than full cooling.
Two boundaries worth stating: an air conditioner dehumidifies the room it serves, not the whole house, and it is not the tool for a damp problem, which is about the building rather than the air. Persistent condensation and mould deserve a ventilation and damp investigation, not a cooling unit.
