Why is air conditioning installation so expensive?
Because most of the price is certified skilled labour, not the unit. Refrigerant work is legally restricted to F-Gas certified engineers, the pipework must be vacuum-tested before any refrigerant flows, and the electrical connection needs certification. The £600 unit is the cheap part; making it a safe, efficient, legal installation is the job.
Break a £2,000 install down and it stops looking expensive. The unit and outdoor condenser: £700 to £1,200. Copper pipework, insulation, trunking, brackets, electrical supply parts: £150 to £250. What remains pays for a day of a two-person team, one of them F-Gas certified, doing work that decides whether the system lasts fifteen years or fails in three.
The invisible steps are the ones that matter. Pipework is pressure-tested with nitrogen, then evacuated with a vacuum pump to remove air and moisture before refrigerant is released; moisture left in the circuit becomes acid that eats the compressor. Skipping or rushing the vacuum stage is the classic shortcut of cheap installs, and it is invisible on handover day.
Certification is a legal cost, not an optional one. UK F-Gas regulations restrict refrigerant handling to certified engineers, and R32, the standard modern refrigerant, is mildly flammable, which tightens the rules further. An uncertified install voids the manufacturer warranty and can void home insurance.
If a quote seems high, ask for its shape rather than a discount: unit model, pipe run length, condenser position, electrical work, test procedure. A good installer can defend every line. A vague quote that undercuts everyone usually resolves its mystery on invoice day.
