What warranty comes with air conditioning?

Short answer

Mainstream manufacturers back their units with 5 to 7 year parts warranties, conditional on two things: installation by certified or accredited installers, and documented annual servicing. The installation workmanship itself carries the installer's own guarantee. Registration is the step people miss; we register the warranty at commissioning so the clock starts correctly.

Two warranties cover a new system and they answer different failures. The manufacturer's warranty covers the equipment: compressor, boards, fans, sensors, typically 5 to 7 years across the mainstream brands. The installer's workmanship guarantee covers the installation: pipework joints, mounting, electrical connection, drainage. A leak at a flare joint in year two is a workmanship matter; a failed board is a manufacturer claim; a good installer handles both conversations for you.

The conditions are where warranties are won and lost. Certified installation first: manufacturers decline claims on systems installed outside their requirements, another cost hiding inside the cheapest quote. Annual servicing second: the claim assessor asks for the service history, and 'none' is an expensive answer. Keep the folder; ours arrives at handover with the commissioning data, F-Gas certification and registration confirmation in it.

Registration deserves its own sentence because it is the step that lapses: several brands' headline warranty terms require the unit registered within weeks of commissioning, defaulting to a shorter period otherwise. We do it as part of the install so the full term applies.

What no warranty covers: consumables and neglect, filters left to choke, coils never cleaned, condensate drains blocked into overflow, and damage from unqualified tampering. The pattern across all of it: the behaviours that keep a warranty valid are the same ones that make the system last, which is the point.
