What is R32 refrigerant and does it matter?
R32 is the standard refrigerant in current air conditioning systems: more efficient than the R410A it replaced and with about a third of its global warming potential if released. It is mildly flammable, which is one reason installation is legally restricted to F-Gas certified engineers. If you are buying new, R32 is what you should be offered.
Refrigerant generations tell the industry's environmental story. R22 was phased out years ago and cannot legally be topped up; R410A served a generation of systems but carries a high warming potential; R32 is the current standard, cutting that figure by roughly two-thirds while transferring heat more efficiently, which shows up as better seasonal efficiency numbers on the same hardware.
The flammability question deserves a straight answer: R32 is classified A2L, mildly flammable, meaning it can ignite only within narrow concentration ranges and with an ignition source, conditions a correctly installed sealed system never approaches. The classification changes engineering practice, charge limits per room size, handling procedures, not the safety of a properly installed system in your home.
For buyers the practical points are three. New systems should be R32; anyone quoting new R410A equipment is clearing old stock. Existing R410A systems are fine to run and service for years yet, though a major repair on one starts the replace-versus-repair maths. And R32's efficiency contributes to why like-for-like replacements typically run 10 to 20% cheaper than the decade-old system they succeed.
Beyond R32, propane-based systems (R290) are arriving in parts of the market with even lower warming potential; expect the refrigerant story to keep moving. Nothing you buy today gets stranded: R32 supply and support run for decades.
